Officer paralyzed after police helicopter crashed in Georgia

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - A Georgia police officer is paralyzed after co-piloting a helicopter that crashed during a storm near Atlanta.

Gwinnett County Police told news outlets Monday that 46-year-old Cpl. Michael Duncan is paralyzed from the waist down after the Sept. 1 crash. It happened in a grassy area at Briscoe Field, about 200 yards (180 meters) from the hanger where the MD 369 helicopter is based in Lawrenceville, 30 miles (48 kilometers) northeast of Atlanta.

Police say 38-year-old officer George McLain also was injured in the crash and is recovering. Duncan has been with the police department for 11 years, and McLain has spent nearly two years with the department.

Gwinnett County Cpl. Michele Pihera says the chopper was returning after the pilots helped officers on the ground search for a suspect.
