McDuffie County dementia patient found safe

A missing dementia patient was located this afternoon in McDuffie County.

Avis McGahee, 85, of 5674 Mattie Harrison Road in Dearing, was missing since about 1:20 p.m.in the area. She was located by a deputy in a hay field off Hobbs Road around 5:20 p.m. Maj. Ronnie Williamson of the McDuffie County Sheriff’s office said EMS crews were checking her over, but said she was coherent and had only a few scratches on her.

“We were very lucky today,” Williamson said.

A joint effort between local, state and neighboring law enforcement agencies helped locate McGahee, who drove away from her home on a golf cart. The golf cart was located in a wooded area nearby.
