Nine indicted in federal tax fraud case

A federal indictment recently unsealed accuses nine Augusta area defendants of participating in a tax fraud conspiracy that netted them more than $2 million.

In addition to charges of conspiracy to commit mail fraud effecting a financial institution and aggravated identity fraud, the federal indictments seek a forfeiture of the stolen tax refund checks. The defendants are Michael Birt, Shawanda Cuyler, Louquana Davis, Octavia Hall, Dock Lewis, Charles Mathis, Travaris Moore, Brigham Westmoreland and Tomica Willingham.

Birt is accused of leading the conspiracy between January 2010 and Sept. 20, 2013 that stole victims’ personal identification such as birth dates and Social Security numbers to file fraudulent tax returns.
