Georgia’s best firefighters will show off their skills on Friday at the annual Georgia Firefighter’s Competition.
The competition, hosted in part by Athens-Clarke County Fire & Emergency Services, is free to attend and begins Friday at 5 p.m. in the 440 Foundry Pavilion at The Classic Center in downtown Athens.
Nine teams of five firefighters will participate in a variety of events that allow them to showcase their training and the skills they use to fight fires.
Using four, 2-gallon buckets, the teams will race to fill a 40-gallon drum in the Bucket Brigade event.
High pressure streams from the teams’ fire hoses will be used to roll a barrel down a track in the Barrel Roll event and used to knock down targets during the One Into Two event.
The teams will also participate in a mystery event, revealed to them shortly before the competition begins.
Individual firefighters also have the chance to compete in the Rapid Dress competition, where the participants don 45 pounds of gear and protective equipment as fast as possible.
The competition is a favorite at the Georgia Fire Service Conference, a yearly event that features training and networking opportunities for firefighters across the state.
