A worker at an Augusta day care has been arrested after nine children were left unattended Friday afternoon.

According to a news release from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, county fire inspector Jermaine Jennings was at Karen’s Kiddie Korner at 2533 Deans Bridge Road for a routine annual inspection. While there, he noticed nine children sleeping at the facility and one adult in charge.

At 2:50 p.m., Jennings was completing paperwork in the parking lot when he noticed Karen Jones, 51, leave the building and drive away in a black Mercedes. The children were left alone in the business with the doors locked.

Jennings called the sheriff’s office when he saw children moving around unsupervised. At 3:30 p.m., the daughter of the day care worker was dropped off by a school bus and opened the doors for law enforcement.

When Jones returned to the day care, she was arrested and charged with five counts of reckless conduct. She has been booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center. The children, whose ages ranged from 1 to 9 years old, were not harmed and were returned to their parents.
