A Spring Lakes man is believed to have suffered from a medical incident and died before crashing into the front of a Martinez home.

Mickey Carlyle Barefield, 52, was the lone fatality in the Thursday incident in the 600 block of Clinton Way West in the Merrymont subdivision, according to Columbia County deputy coroner Harriett Garrison.

A witness at the scene did not indicate that the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed, according to Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Butch Askew.

He added that a fire was reported, however the smoke was the result of the vehicle still being in gear after it came to a stop inside the living room area of the residence.

Askew also stated the homeowner, who lives alone, was not home at the time of the incident and no other injuries occurred at the scene.
