North Augusta man dies in Interstate 20 crash

A North Augusta man died Saturday after an early morning crash on Interstate 20.

 

According to a statement from Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher, Caleb Joseph Metz, 26, was driving westbound when his vehicle crossed into the eastbound lanes near mile marker 39 and struck a vehicle about 4 a.m.

Metz died at the scene. The three occupants of the other vehicle were taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening.

At 5:30 a.m., there was a second fatal crash in the same area when a driver from Columbia hit the side of a Lexington County fire truck that was assisting at the scene.

Keith D. Kennedy, 25, died at the scene. Two firefighters and a state trooper were taken to hospitals with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

The first crash is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the second.
