Inmate found dead in Aiken County jail

An inmate has died in the Aiken County Detention Center, according to the sheriff’s office and coroner.


James B. Oakman, 57, of Aiken, was found unresponsive about 11:05 am Sunday by a detention officer conducting a routine check. Aiken County EMS was notified while detention officers and onsite medical staff performed life-saving measures until EMS arrived, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

Oakman was pronounced dead at the detention center.

There was no evidence of injury or trauma and no foul play is suspected, according to a statement from Coroner Tim Carlton.

An autopsy is scheduled Monday in Newberry, S.C.

The Coroner’s Office and the State Law Enforcement Division will conduct an investigation.
