Coroner releases identity of ‘mentally disturbed’ man who died in deputy’s custody

A man who died Sunday while being taken to AU Medical Center by a Richmond County sheriff’s deputy has been identified.

Tenniel Ealey, 32, of 100 Kim Court in Blythe, was pronounced dead at 3:38 p.m. Sunday. Deputies had been called to 4407 Carswell St. at 1:30 p.m. and decided the man should be taken to the hospital, according to a sheriff’s office news release release which described him as “mentally disturbed.”

“While en route to the hospital, the transporting deputy observed the subject in the rear of his patrol car not responding to the deputy. The deputy stopped the patrol car at Woodlake Drive and Windsor Spring Road and observed the subject was not breathing,” according to the release. “The deputy immediately notified EMS and began to render first aid. Upon EMS’ arrival, the subject was transported to Augusta University E.R. where he was later pronounced deceased.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate. Ealey’s body was taken to the GBI lab for autopsy, Coroner Mark Bowen said in a news release.
