‘Mentally disturbed’ man dies in deputy’s custody

A 32-year-old man described as “mentally disturbed” died Sunday while being taken to Augusta University Medical Center by a Richmond County sheriff’s deputy, according to a news release.

Deputies were called to 4407 Carswell St. at 1:30 p.m. and decided the man should be taken to the hospital, according to the release.

“While en route to the hospital, the transporting deputy observed the subject in the rear of his patrol car not responding to the deputy. The deputy stopped the patrol car at Woodlake Drive and Windsor Spring Road and observed the subject was not breathing,” according to the release. “The deputy immediately notified EMS and began to render first aid. Upon EMS’ arrival, the subject was transported to Augusta University E.R. where he was later pronounced deceased.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate. The names of the dead man and the deputies were withheld by the sheriff’s office.
