A 4-year-old girl drowned at Thurmond Lake on Saturday.
Evelynn Hoskins, of Martinez, was at Wildwood Park with her parents, siblings and friends for a birthday party, according to Bonnie King, Columbia County’s deputy coroner.
The child was wearing a life jacket most of the day but took it off while the group of 20 ate cupcakes about 4:30 p.m., King said.
A little after 5 p.m., Evelynn’s parents, Joseph and Erin Hoskins, noticed that she was missing and hadn’t been seen for about 15 minutes. The party guests and bystanders began searching, and calls were made to the park ranger and 911.
About 6:05 p.m., one of the searchers, a retired Richmond County sheriff’s deputy, found the body in the lake. King did not know his name.
Attempts to revive the girl with CPR failed, King said. Evelynn was taken by ambulance to Doctors Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 6:46 p.m., King said.
The body will be sent to Atlanta for an autopsy, which is standard procedure, King said. An investigator from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has been assigned to the case, also standard procedure, she said.
