The Augusta Chronicle received 13 awards at the Georgia Press Association banquet Friday night, including a first place for its local news coverage.
Other first place awards in the press association’s largest circulation division went to editorial page editor Mike Ryan in editorial writing and Rick McKee in the editorial cartoonist category. Judging was done by members of the Alabama Press Association.
The Chronicle won second place awards in education writing (Doug Stutsman), page one design (Robin Jones and Amanda Holahan), editorial writing (Joe Hotchkiss), editorial page and layout and design.
In the Magazine Product category, Augusta Magazine won second place.
Third place awards went to David Westin and Joey Jones in headline writing, Robin Jones in page design, and to the sports department for its Masters Section special issue.
The Chronicle also placed third in the general excellence category.
The Columbia County News-Times won six awards in the weekly newspaper category, including first place in news photograph (Abbigail Lennon), hard news writing (Lennon) and sports feature photography (Chris Gay).
Gay also won second and third place in sports feature photography and third place in humorous column.
