Seven people, including several children, injured in Columbia County car crash

Seven people, including several children, were injured in a car wreck Friday afternoon in Columbia County.

 

Police say all the passengers inside the wrecked vehicle were transported to AU Medical Center.

According to Capt. Andy Shedd of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Tara McConnell, 46, of Martinez, was driving a Honda Accord and failed to yield to an oncoming pickup truck, which struck the side of the car. The car then crashed into the parking lot of a gas station at the intersection of Belair and Columbia roads.

First responders had to use extraction equipment to remove doors off the Accord to reach those inside, police say.

The driver was treated for minor injuries. Two 11-year-old girls, an 11-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy were treated for minor injuries. The status of a 10-year-old boy is unknown, and a six-year-old girl is being treated for a serious injury.

Toxicology results have not come back and charges against McConnell are pending, according to Shedd. a The driver of the truck was not injured.
