A North Augusta man was arrested Tuesday night and charged with killing his 1-month-old son through physical abuse, the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office said today.
Trevonta Randell Langford, 26, was arrested for homicide by child abuse and was taken to the Aiken County Detention Center.
Deputies were originally called to Langford’s home in the 500 block of Samuels Street in North Augusta on March 31 along with emergency medical services. They were met at the door by Langford holding the unresponsive child. They performed CPR on the child and were able to get a pulse and the child was transported to University Hospital.
Langford told deputies the child had been suffering from a fever and had seen a pediatrician a week before, who he said advised him to take the child home and wait for the fever to pass. The fever persisted, Langford told deputies, and the child developed a cough and mucus that he suctioned away, according to reports. But later he noticed the child had stopped breathing and his attempts to revive the child were unsuccessful before calling 911 and the child’s mother, who was away.
Deputies were told the child died May 13 and an investigation determined the child had sustained injuries from physical abuse, according to a news release from the sheriff’s department.
