Driver charged with homicide, DUI after truck plunges into canal

The driver of a pickup that plunged into the Augusta Canal early Sunday has been charged with vehicular homicide and drunken driving, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Department.

Eduardo Gonzales, 26, of Brook Lane in Augusta, was taken to Augusta University Medical Center after his truck plowed through the guard rail of the westbound Interstate 20 bridge at the Georgia-South Carolina state line.

His passenger, Michael Botello, 20, of Augusta, was killed.

Gonzales is expected to be released from the hospital Monday, and will be transferred to the Webster Detention Center, the sheriff’s department said in a news release.

The truck was completely submerged and a dive team was called in. Gonzalez was found first, and Botello’s body was found later.
