Aiken man arrested in Graniteville Cemetery vandalism

Ritchie

An Aiken man was arrested Thursday for allegedly vandalizing Graniteville Cemetery.

The incident was reported Oct. 30, and deputies immediately met with complainants, who found damage to several graves and tire tracks from a vehicle. Following a three-month investigation, Ashtin Dale Ritchie, 23, was arrested on charges of leaving the scene of the accident and trespassing, according to a news release from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.

“I want to thank our deputies who worked hard to bring this investigation to this point,” Aiken County Sheriff Michael Hunt said. “I also want to thank the citizens involved for their cooperation in this case.”

Throughout the investigation, deputies were provided with a video that captured a vehicle speeding through the cemetery near the monument cross. During the course of the investigation, deputies followed up on several leads that eventually led them to Ritchie.

Ritchie was booked into the Aiken County Detention Center.

What an immature low life individual. No respect for the dead so you can bet no respect for the living. He needs to make restitution and be given several hundred hours of community service to be served at the cemetery, also 5 years probation. If he breaks any law doing that time he then goes to prison.

I am glad this thug is behind bars, but one charge the ACSO put on him baffles me. Leaving the scene of an accident?? This was NOT an accident it seems to me. Is vandalism now the same as leaving the scene of an accident or what?
