A stroll by the river

Franklin Chrisman and Victoria Chrisman take a walk across the Augusta Canal Headgates on Wednesday afternoon with their children Lillian (from left), 5, Sophia, 7 months, and Ronnie, 3. The headgates is where the Augusta Canal breaks off from the Savannah and was built in 1845. By 1847 factories started to pop up near the canal to take advantage it’s hydropower. The Augusta Canal National Heritage Headgates Area was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1975.
