ATHENS, Ga. -- A stretch of South Milledge Avenue in southeastern Athens-Clarke County was closed three hours Wednesday due to spilled waste from portable toilets.
The waste came from a tanker truck that overturned near East Whitehall Road shortly before 1 p.m., Athens-Clarke County police said. No other vehicles were involved in the incident and the driver of the tanker truck suffered a slight head injury, according to police.
South Milledge Avenue was closed between Georgia Botanical Gardens and East Whitehall Road during the clean-up. Hazardous material technicians with the Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services Department assisted.
The incident was the second messy mishap this week that disrupted traffic on a major Athens thoroughfare. On Monday, a truck traveling on Jefferson Road sprung a leak and left a trail of chicken innards from the Athens Perimeter interchange to the Jackson County line.
