Woman charged with cruelty to children

  • Follow News

An Augusta woman is accused of cruelty to children after police say they found her two daughters unconscious in a hotel room late Sunday.

Crystal Yvonne Avery, 27, of Blossom Drive, was charged with two counts of felony cruelty to children after her 4-year-old and 2-year-old were found alone in the Super 8 motel at 2137 Gordon Highway, according to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office report.

While interviewing Avery for an unrelated incident, police learned that she had left her two daughters at a hotel with her “lifelong childhood friend.” When deputies asked for the name of Avery’s friend, she struggled for a response.

Avery’s daughters were found unconscious and the room had “the overwhelming smell of burnt marijuana,” according to the report.

The children were breathing normally, but deputies said they appeared to be under the influence of some substance because of their lack of awareness.

Surveillance footage showed a large number of people entering the room while Avery was gone.

The children were temporarily placed in the care of Avery’s cousin.

Deputies later received a call from a woman who told police that Avery and her friend were strippers and that it was common for Avery to leave her children unattended.

She's Not A Parent

She was simply a sperm receptacle. For the life of me, I cannot understand the total lack of responsibility of fertile single women. There IS such a thing as birth control. And I'm guessing that the taxpayers will add two more children to provide for, since "Mommie" is not being a parent. @JRC - yes, it is a shame that the kids have to suffer. And @ Seenit -- these women don't hold the baby-daddy responsible -- if they actually know who the baby-daddy is... Maurie Povich has created a TV Show where they try to figure out, "You Are Father" !!

Two solutions

Take the kids and sterilize her so that she can't reproduce.

It happens more than anyone knows

It happens more than anyone knows. I have a son that is almost six yrs old. He's been with us since he was 3 months old. Let's just say circumstances with mother were very similar but this one will never have to go and be picked up at another hotel/motel ever while she works. I'm mommy now and he's been a blessing everyday and I pray us to him. God save these poor children. I wish I could adopt more.
