Lawmaker mulls abortion-rights license plates

  • Follow News

ATLANTA — A Georgia lawmaker is looking to give drivers who support abortion rights the option to demonstrate their viewpoint with a specialty license plate.

WSB-TV reports that out of 125 specialty plates, Georgia drivers have the option of purchasing one showcasing their anti-abortion standpoint. However, specialty license plates promoting an abortion-rights viewpoint are not offered.

The television station reports that Democratic state Sen. Gloria Butler, of Stone Mountain, is looking to review an amendment she introduced in 2005 after the General Assembly approved anti-abortion plates.

A judge in North Carolina recently ruled that offering specialty plates on one side of the issue but not the other was discriminatory and unconstitutional. Butler says that motivated her to reconsider the amendment.

Abortion Plates

The plates could read "I KILL" and have the name of the person who owns the plate.

This is stupid

I have never heard of anything so assinine in my life. Abortion is a touchy subject. To have a license plate for or against it makes me sick to my stomach.
This Lawmaker is loony and needs to go.

Heck, Ga. has freakin' NASCAR

Heck, Ga. has freakin' NASCAR plates, Georgia Junior Golf Foundation, Conditioned Air Association of Georgia (???), LSU alumni association- Atlanta Chapter, you name it, it's pretty much on a Ga. license plate. Get rid of them all and go back to one standard plate with a county sticker. No hassle, no group or supporter of a cause placed above another, just a dang tag for your car. Of course that means no extra funds, but who cares. Get out of the specialty plate business so you don't end up with Baptist, Methodist, Catholic tags, and end up in a lawsuit from The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, the Mormons, or some other group. It's gotten out of hand and right darned stupid.
