Woman arrested in shooting of girl, 9
RIVERDALE, GA. — Police have arrested a woman in the shooting of a 9-year-old girl in metro Atlanta.
Rachell Burrell, 19, appeared Saturday before a judge, who set her bail at $70,000.
Riverdale Police Chief Samuel Patterson says Burrell was staying with the victim, other children and adults in a “babysitting kind of capacity” at a home.
Investigators say the girl is expected to survive after being shot in the stomach Friday.
Burrell is charged with aggravated assault, reckless conduct, cruelty to children and possession of marijuana.
The victim’s name was not released.
Parts of swamp open after fire
FOLKSTON, GA. — Water trails and shelters in the Okefenokee National Wildlife refuge are reopening after long closures because of drought and a sprawling wildfire in the swamp last year.
Refuge rangers say water levels in the swamp’s canoe trails have risen since February. That’s given them a chance to use motorboats to clear trees that fell at the Minnies Lake day shelter last year when wildfire swept through the area. The shelter, which visitors use for rest stops and picnics, is now open.
Much of the Red Trail waterway in the swamp’s interior has also reopened.
