Teen killed when inner tube hits piling

  • Follow News

GEORGETOWN, S.C. - A South Carolina teen has been killed after the inner tube she was riding struck a bridge piling in a river.
Multiple media outlets reported that 18-year-old Allison Howell of Georgetown died after the accident in the Black River in western Georgetown County.
Coroner Kenny Johnson says Howell and a friend were riding an inner tube being pulled by a boat when the driver turned the boat around and the tube swung into a bridge piling.
Johnson says Howell died at Georgetown Hospital late Saturday. He says the girl suffered both head and body injuries.

i was slung up into a big

i was slung up into a big tree on the shore when the driver of the boat was looking at some girls instead of watching me. But according to DNR jet skis that have far less than half the mortality rate of ANY prop driven boat are the most dangerous things on the water even if the facts prove they are not.

Currently the boats that cause the most damage are the wakeboard boats designed to throw huge waves at the shore & are leading the nation in damages, injuries and drownings. This boat may have been one of those.

What does the type of boat or

What does the type of boat or jet ski have to do with any of this? If the story is right, it was obviously driver error in turning too close to the bridge. Not to mention the fact that if the boat were going fast enough to sling someone into a bridge piling and kill them, the driver wasn't following the marked no wake areas, either. I've never encountered a bridge that wasn't a no wake zone on the water.

Wonder if the driver was

Wonder if the driver was drinking or just young and stupid. bdouglas is absolutely right!!! They should have been no where near the bridge doing that going fast enough to kill her. This is why my husband is the only person I let pull me on a tube like that. My deepest condolences to her family. May God bless her in Heaven.

I Agree with "bdouglas"

I Agree with "bdouglas" There is ALWAYS NO WAKE posted plenty of time before you even get to the Bridge. So even if the Driver made a sharp turn there is NOWAY the Innertube would be going fast enough to do the Damage that it did!! The Paper Said.." He says the girl suffered both head and body injuries." So in order to do that type of Damage I wouldnt say he was driving that slow..
My Prayers Do Go Out To All The families!! God Bless..

excuse me but i dont think

excuse me but i dont think any of you have ever been to georgetown, much less that part of the river. idk what the mess your talkin about with the "always no wake" stuff but we werent turning at all and there are no signs on that part of the river. another boat was goin by and the water was rough because of that. we went under the bridge a million times...i also dont think youve ever been intertubiing on Black River. also, the paper was wrong...we were in that boat. we watched the entire thing. really, just shut up.

Not sure about this bridge

Not sure about this bridge but there are lots of bridges that don't have a no wake zone.
