After careful preparation, not a hair was out of place. Fingernails were carefully painted. Makeup was immaculate. The ladies of St. John Towers were radiant as they entered the ballroom for the ninth annual Ms. St. John Towers pageant.
Fourteen women, who were nominated by fellow residents, competed for the title. St. John Towers is a retirement community on Greene Street across from Bell Auditorium.
Contestants were judged on casual and evening wear, and they answered questions and told interesting -- and often funny -- stories about their lives.
"One of the results of the pageant is the bond of friendship they gain with each other," said Kelly Thackston, the activities director at St. John Towers.
The five judges chose Connie Shiver, who was escorted by her son, Cameron Shiver, as Ms. St. John Towers 2010.
