The Way We Were: Julian Smith Casino

For decades Julian Smith Casino has been there at the west end of Broad Street honoring a long ago Augusta mayor with its name and serving as one of the city’s most popular public meeting places.


That’s what the Italian word “casino” originally meant – a public meeting space – not its more modern connotations with gambling endeavors.

As for Julian Smith, he was only mayor from 1923-1925, but his memory lives on in a casino.
