WHERE: On the 2100 block of Vandivere Road across from Magnolia Park Apartments.
WHAT: Poor sewer drainage has caused storm water to puddle in the street each time it rains. The problem has formed a 15-foot crack in the street and caused part of the roadway to sink into a 20-foot-deep hole sloping towards Walden Drive.
WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: The Augusta-Richmond County Engineering Department
ACTION PROMISED: The city has marked the area with construction tape and barriers and attempted to fix the crack and nearby hole with gravel cement, but residents say storm water continues to flow onto their property. Storm water engineer Hameed Malik said the issue was caused by an old system of rusted metal piping that has become weak at certain joints and slumped into the ground.
“We’re working on finalizing an in-house design and finding funding to possibly upgrade the system to concrete piping,” he said. “While we develop a more long-term solution, we’ll keep checking on the hole to make it does not sink any further.”
