WHERE: On Walton Way near the intersection of Fleming Avenue and the Georgia Regents University Summerville campus main entrance.
WHAT: Large tree limbs were piled on the right-of-way between Walton Way and the sidewalk. The limbs were dead and decaying. Also, an Augusta Public Transit bus stop sign with a rusted, bent metal pole was lying on the ground.
WHO’S RESPONSIBLE: City traffic engineer Steve Cassell, whose department oversees cutting trees on rights-of-way, said he did not know how the limbs ended up there. Cassell doubted it was his crews because they typically chip trees immediately after cutting them.
Augusta Public Transit is responsible for the bus stop sign.
ACTION TAKEN: When alerted to the fallen bus stop sign by The Augusta Chronicle on Thursday afternoon, Augusta Public Transit Assistant General Manager David Jones said: “Let me go up there and take care of it right now.”
By Friday morning, the limbs and sign were removed.
A new bus stop sign will be installed no later than Tuesday, he said.
