Woman, child hit, killed on sidewalk

LILBURN, GA. โ€” Police in metro Atlanta say a woman and child were killed in a hit-and-run accident Thursday night.

Lilburn police say the driver of a pickup tried passing another vehicle but lost control and hit a woman and child who were standing on a sidewalk.

Authorities say the driver fled the scene and was later arrested along with a passenger.

Capt. Thomas Bardugon said both are expected to be charged with vehicular homicide and hit-and-run. Their names and the names of the victims have not been released.

Cannonball found at Atlanta work site

ATLANTA โ€” A construction crew unearthed what appears to be a cannonball near Centennial Olympic Park on Thursday.

Police spokesman Gregory Lyon said authorities took the find to a bomb range. The street was closed while investigators removed the object. Georgia World Congress Center Authority spokeswoman Jennifer LeMaster said authorities have not yet determined exactly how old it is.

When federal troops besieged Atlanta in 1864, they fired thousands of cannon shells into the downtown area that now includes Centennial Olympic Park.
