Mike Montarbo and Jennifer Herbert were named Man and Woman of the Year by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Augusta office Friday night.
Over 10 weeks, beginning March 7, 11 contestants competed to raise money for the cancer society, with the top fundraisers winning the honors Friday.
“Every dollar they raise counts
as one vote to help them win the title,” said event organizer Kate Sanders.
The second annual campaign raised more than $241,000, far exceeding its $135,000 goal.
The awards were given during a gala at Sacred Heart Cultural Center that featured a live and silent auction.
Proceeds will benefit research to find a cure for blood cancers including leukemia, lymphoma and Hodgkin lymphoma.
The money also helps patient services and advocacy work, Sanders said.
Most of the six women and five men who competed were inspired to enter the contest because
college classmates, best friends and family members have battled cancer.
Montarbo and Herbert will compete in the national Man and Woman of the Year contest.
