Across South Carolina

COLUMBIA — An Irmo man who prosecutors say killed his wife and a man that his sports betting ring owed $20,000 is invoking South Carolina’s “stand your ground” shooting law.

Brett Parker’s attorney argued in a court motion Friday that he can’t be prosecuted because of the state law allowing a person who fears for his life to use deadly force. Attorney Dave Fedor says Brett Parker killed Bryan Capnerhurst after Capnerhurst killed Parker’s wife and tried to force him to empty money from a safe.

Prosecutors contend Brett Parker fired all the shots, in part to collect insurance on his wife.
