Driver, 45, arrested after hitting officer


ATLANTA โ€” An Atlanta police officer was seriously injured Friday night when his car was hit by a motorist accused of driving drunk.

Police Officer Osbert Beckles was being treated Saturday at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was in serious condition. He is expected to survive.

The accident happened about 11:30 p.m. Friday while Beckles was working traffic near a ramp for Interstate 75.

Scott Eugene Welker, 45, of Kennesaw, is charged with driving under the influence. Police say he ran after the crash but was quickly caught.

Man saves woman in apartment fire

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA. โ€” A man is being credited for carrying a woman overcome by smoke out of a burning apartment building Friday morning.

Demetrice Little told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that she was asleep with her twin 6-year-old grandsons and a niece when Tertiary Pruitt II banged on her door. Pruitt said he saw Little coughing and decided to carry her out.

Assistant DeKalb County Fire Chief Garret Smith said eight apartment units were damaged, displacing up to 16 people.
