Truck hits officer; driver is arrested

DULUTH, GA. — A man accused of hitting a Clayton County police officer with a truck and fleeing the scene in Jonesboro has been arrested.

Police said 36-year-old Thomas Paige was taken into custody about 2 p.m. in Duluth.

Paige was wanted after hitting officer Michael Hooks with a truck while he was responding to a call about two men burglarizing a shuttered department store Dec. 12.

Hooks suffered a serious head injury and was hospitalized after the incident.

Police said Paige is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, obstruction of an officer, hit and run, reckless driving and loitering.

Paige’s accomplice, Jabari Jackson, had already been taken into custody.

Boy, 14, killed in apparent robbery

GRAYSON, GA. — Police in Gwinnett County say a 14-year-old boy was shot to death during an apparent robbery inside his home.

The victim’s father found his son’s body inside their house in Grayson about 2:40 p.m. Wednesday and called police, department spokesman Jake Smith said.

The teen was identified as Paul Sampleton, a student at Grayson High School. Police said Sampleton was released early because the school held a half-day.

Police found evidence of a robbery and it was not immediately clear where the boy was wounded. There was no evidence of forced entry to the home and police were preparing a search warrant for the house Wednesday evening.

Additional details were not immediately available.

Man gets 25 years for manslaughter

GREENWOOD, S.C. — A Greenwood man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the shooting death of another man last year.

Thomas Tyrone Jackson, 24, pleaded guilty this week to voluntary manslaughter.

Talmadge Crawford, 20, of Abbeville, was shot to death on April 30, 2011.

Circuit Judge Frank Addy said Jackson will get credit for the nearly two years he has spent in jail.

Prosecutor Andrew Hodges said Crawford was shot in the front yard of a home in Greenwood. Hodges says the men had been at a nightclub earlier in the evening and then became involved in a fight at the home.

Police said Jackson then pulled a gun and shot Crawford.
