Student attempts suicide at school
HOMER, GA. — A student was severely injured Friday when he shot himself inside a bathroom at Banks County High School, prompting authorities to lock down the school, officials said.
The 16-year-old wounded himself around 8 a.m., Sheriff Charles Chapman said. No other students appeared to have witnessed the shooting. Investigators recovered a handgun that was believed to have been used in the suicide attempt.
The student was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. His condition was not released Saturday.
The school system said emergency lockdown procedures were put in place and that students were released around 2 p.m. after a police search of the building.
Missing teen found dead along shore
GAINESVILLE, GA. — A missing 16-year-old girl was found dead along the shore of Lake Lanier late Friday in what police were treating as a suspicious death.
Hannah Truelove was reported missing Thursday by her mother. A person walking in the woods near apartments in Gainesville on Friday saw her body and called police, Hall County sheriff’s Maj. Woodrow Tripp said.
Truelove’s body was discovered not far from the apartment that she shared with her mother.
Investigators declined to comment Saturday on a possible cause of death.
Police are investigating whether the teenager had a stalker. A Twitter account that appeared to be used by Truelove made reference Aug. 12 to having a stalker.
Athens panel backs Oregon airline offer
ATHENS, GA. — Athens officials are backing an application from a Portland, Ore.-based airline that wants to provide service from Athens-Ben Epps Airport.
A subcommittee of the Athens’ airport authority are supporting a proposal from SeaPort Airlines to provide federally subsidized service from the airport. The U.S. Department of Transportation makes the final decision on which airline to select.
SeaPort has said it would fly passengers in north Georgia to Charlotte, N.C., and Nashville, Tenn. Fares to Charlotte would range from $39 to $119, while tickets to Nashville would range from $59 to $149.
GeorgiaSkies, part of Pacific Wings, provides federally subsidized service to Atlanta. It has not applied to renew its contract, which expires Sept. 30.
