Aimee Copeland improving in rehab

Less than a month after her release from Doctors Hospital, Aimee Copeland is making significant strides in her physical rehabilitation.

In an updated blog Sunday, her father, Andy, said Copeland could now do 200 crunches in seven minutes and 400 leg lifts in seven minutes.

“At this point I have to pause and ask a simple question: How many of you can do 200 crunches in seven minutes?” Andy Copeland wrote.

The physical therapist told the family that the exercises will help condition Copeland’s body to be strong enough to maneuver in and out of her chair onto any surface.

“She’s pretty doggone good at it too,” he said.

Two months ago, the story was quite different. Doctors gave the 24-year-old a slim chance of surviving.

The Snellville, Ga., graduate student at the University of West Georgia was admitted to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Augusta’s Doctors Hospital after she became infected with a bacteria attacking her flesh. She had cut her leg in a zip-lining accident May 1. Her left leg, right foot and both hands were amputated.

She was released on July 2 and moved to an inpatient rehabilitation clinic in metro Atlanta, where she would spend several weeks learning to use a wheelchair and be fitted for prosthetic limbs.

Andy Copeland says his daughter is focusing on “not being handicapped.” Recently he purchased a van to transport his daughter, but he was surprised to learn that she didn’t approve of his plan.

According to his blog, she told her father she refused to be chauffeured around. Instead, she planned on driving herself.
