The mayor of Charleston, S.C., was in Augusta on Thursday night to speak at a benefit to launch the 2012 Capital Campaign for the Hale House Foundation Inc.
Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr., who was first elected in 1975, made a presentation about historical preservation in Charleston at the benefit dinner at St. Paul’s Church’s River Room.
Cliff Richards, the president and CEO of the Hale House Foundation said, the transitional program for men recovering from substance abuse problems is involved in Augusta’s downtown preservation. It has five buildings and is working on finishing a kitchen and dining hall – dubbed Sibley Hall after Hale’s founder, Samuel Hale Sibley.
Hale House and Sibley Hall are located in the 400 block of Walker Street.
The dinner also raised money to buy more property for Hale House, Richards said.
