Artistic bird dog statues to be auctioned in Waynesboro

For the second year in a row, the “bird dog capital of the world” will use concrete likenesses of the town’s official mascot as a artistic medium – all for a good cause.

At least 10 local and regional artists are using their time and talent to decorate concrete bird dog statues for a Nov. 19-20 benefit auction to raise money for Liberty Art and the Waynesboro Downtown Organization of Retailers, whose members help organize events in the city.

“Gone to the Dogs II” will include an opening reception at First Liberty Market in Waynesboro, from 5 to 10 p.m. Nov. 19, which includes bird dog statue previews and the auction. The event will continue from 12:30 to 4 p.m. the following day.

Last year’s auction generated more than $17,000, including winning bids of $5,000 apiece for two of the creations: Janet Stulb’s “Staffordshire” creation and Billy Joe Johnson’s “Woody Bark.”
