UGA to dedicate statue of its founder, Baldwin


ATHENS, GA. — The University of Georgia is dedicating a statue of its founder and first president, Abraham Baldwin.

The $90,000 bronze statue is a gift from the UGA Alumni Association. It will sit 7 feet high on a 2-foot granite stand in a plaza on the North Campus near the administration building.

Baldwin founded UGA in 1785 and served as president until 1801. He represented Geor­gia as a delegate to the constitutional convention in 1787 and was a longtime politician until his death in 1807 at age 53.

The dedication ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday.

Corvette hits house; driver, passenger flee

ELLENWOOD, GA. — Police say the driver and passenger of a Corvette ran off after the car crashed into a DeKalb County home.

Homeowner Marcia Hunter told WSB-TV that she and her husband were in other rooms and weren’t hurt when the car came through the wall of their Ellenwood house.

Hunter said she heard a boom and felt a jolt to the house. The dark red car still had its lights on and the radio blasting.

The crash caused major property damage. Hunter said the spare bedroom that the car crashed into was used as an office and exercise room.

Man wields assault weapon in robbery

COLUMBUS, GA. — Columbus police say a man used an assault weapon during a robbery at a gas station.

Lt. Lynn Joiner told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that the gunman entered the gas station Saturday night holding what appeared to be an M-16 assault rifle.

The man ran away after robbing the clerk.

Joiner said it’s unusual for robbers to have assault weapons. Police said no one was hurt.
