Reality TV star Frankie Lons will make a stop in Augusta on Saturday to promote her new book.
In the motivational book The Best Years I Never Had, Lons talks about her struggles with addiction, prostitution and being a single mother of seven children and how she turned her life around, Lons said during a telephone interview.
The book signing, part of a two-month, multi-city tour, will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. at Bar 544 at 544 Broad St.
Lons, the mother of R&B singer Keyshia Cole, became famous for her appearances on Cole’s BET reality show Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is and a spinoff show Frankie and Neffe. Most recently, she appeared on VH1’s Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew.
Her manager, Leroy McMath, said he wanted Lons to write the book because he feels she is misunderstood, and he wanted the public to get to know her better. He calls Lons a “recovering success story” because she went from being on drugs and in the streets to becoming an entrepreneur, appearing on TV shows and writing books.
“The whole point of the book is so people can understand her. They see her all over the TV ... when you read the book, you really don’t see the same Frankie that you see on TV,” McMath said. “But you see this person who was once a regular, everyday high school student, she was a college student, and someone turned her onto drugs. She became everything that you become when you can’t control the drugs for years.”
Lons, 51, said she hopes the book will educate and inspire other mothers. During her book tour, she will speak with women about sex, drug abuse, prostitution and being a single mother.
The book provides details of her life on the streets, her children, her role in the arrests of three people who were killing prostitutes and her own years in jail, Lons said.
“There’s a Frankie in every family. I’ve been through it, and you’re not the only one who’s been through it. You can overcome this. It may take 30 years, but don’t give up,” Lons said. “I think it’s going to change a lot of people, especially women, who are struggling from the drugs, to prostitution or whatever.”
As she enters a new chapter of her life, Lons said she’s looking forward to having her “American dream.” She wants to have all seven of her children in the same room at the same time, in addition to having her life story produced as a major motion picture.
