Jessye Norman to miss concert in Augusta; street naming postponed

Opera singer Jessye Norman will not attend the planned honorary Jessye Norman Boulevard sign unveiling scheduled for Friday. The ceremony will be delayed until she can come to Augusta.

Norman also will be unable to attend Sunday’s Jessye Norman School of the Arts benefit concert, Family Ties: Augusta’s Famous Siblings, which features Russell Joel Brown, Karen Brown, Wycliffe Gordon and Karen Gordon. The concert will be held as scheduled.

A news release said that Norman has been present at each benefit concert since the concerts began in 2003 and that the Augusta native “is very regretful that she cannot make the trip to Augusta at this time. She is preparing a video to be shown during the concert, and will be present in this way.”

The concert will be held at 4 p.m. at Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre on the Summerville campus of Augusta University.

In addition to the Brown and Gordon siblings, students from the Jessye Norman School of the Arts will dance and sing.

Tickets cost $40 for adults and $25 for students under 25 with an ID and are available each afternoon at the Jessye Norman School of the Arts, 739 Greene St., or at
