High school football season begins

As usual, coaches would prefer more preparation time. But the calendar says it’s time to go – football season is here.

Today marks the start of the high school football season for some area schools. Time is running out for any little tweaks to game plans as host stadiums get any needed touch-ups in time for kickoff.

At Aquinas, James Leonard is among the coaches just a few hours away from his first game as head coach. The Irish, 8-3 in 2012, begin the 2013 season tonight at home against East Laurens.

Burke County travels to Thomson in a showdown of two quality programs with a realistic chance of contending for a state championship.

In South Carolina, Silver Bluff and Strom Thurmond meet to begin the season a year after both reached the state semifinals in their classification.

The games come after months of getting ready in the weight room or on the practice field.

“We’re just ready to go,” Leonard said. “We’ve been working all summer. We’re ready to go out and see what happens.”
