A team of Augusta area home school students will advance to the state Science Olympiad competition next month after placing in a regional event.

The Augusta Area Homeschool team placed third out of 24 teams Saturday at the Regional Science Olympiad at North Georgia University in Gainesville, according to team organizers. The top five teams move on to the state level.

Teams of students from grades 6 through 9 competed in 23 events, which tested their knowledge and problem-solving skills in science.

The annual contest is sponsored by Science Olympiad, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of science education and increasing interest in science.

The state competition will be held March 16 at Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Ga.
