Smelly spill closes lane on Peach Orchard Road

A cargo spill on Peach Orchard Road shut down one lane of traffic Tuesday, creating a stench that could be smelled for blocks away.

One lane of Peach Orchard Road has been shut down while officials clean a cargo spill that could be smelled from several blocks away.

About 2:51 p.m. Richmond County dispatch received a call of a cargo spill at the intersection of Peach Orchard and Lumpkin roads.

Elixson Transport driver Jason Bradley said he was at a stoplight when he hit his brakes, causing the vehicle’s cargo -- 30,000 pounds of meat -- to spill onto the roadway.

Bradley said the meat was a mixture cow, chicken and alligator guts and bones.
