Bear spotted near Warren Rd.

Bear spotted Sunday night in a west Augusta parking lot

Richmond County sheriff’s deputies and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources were called to the Warren Road area late Sunday after several reports of a black bear in the area.

The calls came in just before midnight, and a deputy has been dispatched to the area to look for the bear. Further details will be forthcoming.

DNR provides tips for handling bears in residential areas:

- Never pursue a bear on foot or in vehicles in an attempt to chase it from the area.

- Give it plenty of space and an avenue of retreat.

- Homeowners should remove dogs from the area (keep them penned up) so the bear doesn't run up a tree.

- Remove all dog and cat food from porches or yards.

- Put trash out on the day of pickup by the garbage company.
