Blown transformer results in power outages on Wrightsboro Road

An electric transformer exploded Tuesday evening, causing multiple traffic lights to stop working on Wrightsboro Road near the Augusta Mall.

The outage was reported around 6:30 p.m., deputies say.

The incident caused multiple west-bound traffic lights to stop operating, forcing deputies to direct traffic at a number of intersections. The intersections included Wrightsboro Road and Jimmie Dyess Parkway, Wrightsboro Road and Belair Road and the off-ramp at Wrightsboro Road and Interstate 520.

The cause for the transformer malfunction was not immediately known.
