Canal tours put on hold; boats to be inspected

Daily guided tours of the Augusta Canal will be put on hold while the U.S. Coast Guard performs mandatory inspections on the waterway’s two Petersburg boats.

According to a statement from the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area, the 65-foot vessels will be out of service from Jan. 30 to Feb. 13 while their hulls are inspected. During that time, canal staff will paint the vessels and perform other required maintenance.

A crane will be used to lift the boats from the water and place them on specially-built supports on the canal’s south bank near John C. Calhoun Expressway.

Tours will be suspended until Feb. 14.
