Hundreds of families in need will take home a free turkey Monday for their Thanksgiving feast.
The annual James Brown Turkey Giveaway will be at 8:30 a.m. at Dyess Park, 902 James Brown Blvd. Members of the Brown family and volunteers will hand out turkeys to preregistered households.
Soul music icon James Brown started handing out turkeys more than 20 years ago. The Brown Family Children Foundation continues to hold the event.
“We’re pleased to do it every year, God help us,” said Elif Crawford, Brown’s former personal assistant, who helps organize the giveaway for the foundation.
About 600 households registered for turkeys, Crawford said. After a group prayer, it will take about an hour to hand out the turkeys to those in line, beginning with the elderly. Recipients must bring a photo ID.
The turkeys are provided by Comcast, James Brown Arena, Wal-Mart, small businesses and individuals, Crawford said.
