Spooky food drive set for Saturday in Columbia County

Volunteers will be out in force in Columbia County neighborhoods Saturday, collecting food and donations for the annual It’s Spooky To Be Hungry food drive.

Last year more than 1,600 volunteers participated from over 400 local neighborhoods, schools and other organizations in the CSRA. In 2012, the drive collected more than 135,620 pounds of food and $60,477 -- the equivalent of 293,513 meals to area needy, according to Carrie Jones, with Golden Harvest Food bank, which benefits from the drive.

The collection date for Richmond County neighborhoods is Oct. 26.

In addition to neighborhood collections, the food drive has more than 175 collection sites at schools, faith communities, and businesses, which will be accepting donations through the end of the month, Jones said.
