NORTH AUGUSTA — Two men are in custody after the holdup Tuesday of a North Augusta bank, which led to a chase through two counties and ended with money being thrown from the fleeing vehicle before it was stopped.
Police have identified the men they arrested as George D. Oakman III, 22, of Warrenville, and David L. Cassell, 26, of Aiken. Both men are charged with armed robbery, and Oakman faces an additional charge of failure to stop for blue lights.
North Augusta Public Safety Lt. Tim Thornton said police were called to Regions Bank on West Avenue about 12:45 p.m.
Witnesses told police Cassell entered the bank and gave a teller a note demanding cash. He fled with the money.
A North Augusta officer tried to stop a vehicle that matched the description of the one used by the bandits, but it sped away.
Officers from North Augusta, Aiken County, Richmond County and the Georgia State Patrol were involved in a chase that went from North Augusta into Richmond County on 13th Street and then back into Aiken County by the Fifth Street bridge.
According to Richmond County dispatchers, the chase reached speeds of about 100 mph before ending near Warrenville.
Thornton said money was thrown from the vehicle before police apprehended the suspects in the vehicle.
Thornton said no one was injured during the robbery.
