Two Richmond County sheriff’s deputies found a small marijuana garden growing outside a Cherry Tree Crossing apartment Thursday while on foot patrol in the public housing complex, according to an incident report.
The two officers reported smelling a strong odor of marijuana around 2:15 p.m. while walking the 1600 block of McCauley Street. The deputies followed the scent to a residence where they saw a fenced garden next to an apartment front porch.
Next to some tomatoes and green peppers were two marijuana plants – one four feet tall and another three feet tall – tied to a wooden stake. A large bag of fertilizer was found on the front porch.
No one was inside the apartment at the time, but officers spoke with the Augusta Housing Authority and obtained arrest warrants for the resident – identified in the incident report as Terry McRae, 54 – after field testing the marijuana as positive.
