Recent reports of “scam artists” impersonating Georgia Power employees over the phone have prompted advisories that customers should never provide personal information to an unverified caller.
The scammers, who have victimized customers recently in Atlanta and Savannah – but not yet in Augusta – will call customers, claim their account is past due and threaten to disconnect service without an immediate payment. In most cases, the customers are asked to buy a prepaid debit card and provide the card’s account number.
Both residential and commercial customers are being victimized in the scam, according to Georgia Power officials, and such criminals often target senior citizens or those speaking English as a second language.
In actuality, when Georgia Power customers are past due on their account, the company will contact them by calling their primary account telephone number with a prerecorded message requesting that they phone Georgia Power to discuss the status of their account. Georgia Power does not ask for personal information over the phone.
Additionally, Georgia Power will never send an employee to a customer’s home to collect payment. If an employee needs to visit a customer’s home for a service-related issue, he or she will be in uniform and present a badge with a photo, name, and the company’s name and logo. The employee will be in a vehicle marked with the logo.
