A fish kill was reported Saturday along a Columbia County tributary of the Savannah River, but its cause remains unknown.
The affected area appeared to be limited to a segment of Betty’s Branch, said Jay Jacobs, a staff member of Savannah Riverkeeper.
Jacobs and a fellow Riverkeeper official came to the site after a resident reported dead fish in the area.
“We found about 60 dead fish,” Jacobs said. “We saw perch, catfish, (largemouth) bass, chain pickerel, shad, suckers and carp – and there were multiple sizes.”
Dead fish were in the channel downstream from Columbia County’s Riverview Park boat ramp, he said, but none were seen in the main river channel.
Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources was notified.
